Best Things to Do in Destin FL This Weekend: September 19-20, 2026 Roundup (Last Weekend of Summer)
By the Destin Vacation Activities team · Published September 18, 2026
Friday, September 18, 2026. Summer officially ends Tuesday afternoon with the equinox, and Destin is sending it off properly: Saturday is forecast sunny with a high near 89, east wind 5 to 10 and a 12 percent rain chance, the Gulf is 86.5 degrees by the NOAA gauge this morning, and the crowds that filled every parking lot from Memorial Day to Labor Day are gone. Sunday is mostly sunny and 88 but carries a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1pm, which is the one fact that shapes the whole weekend plan.
This is the roundup I would hand a friend arriving Friday night: what to do Saturday, how to build Sunday around the storm window, what the on-the-water activities cost this weekend, what is open and what has thinned out, and what I would skip. Yesterday's fall season guide covers October; this is only about the next two days.
Planning the whole trip? Use the step-by-step itinerary planner, keep the rainy-day backup plan handy for Sunday afternoon, and see yesterday's fall guide for what changes after the 22nd.
The weekend at a glance
The National Weather Service point forecast for Destin, updated at 1:56am Central Friday: Saturday sunny, 89, east 5 to 10; Saturday night mostly clear, 77, wind dying to west 0 to 5. Sunday mostly sunny, 88, west 5, with a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1pm and a 50 percent precipitation chance that carries through Sunday night and Monday. Tuesday, the first day of fall, drops to 30 percent. The National Hurricane Center had no active storms on its list Friday morning.
Sunrise is 6:31am Saturday and 6:32am Sunday; sunset is 6:48pm and 6:46pm. Tides at the East Pass are diurnal with about seven tenths of a foot of range: high 4:32am and low 4:48pm Saturday, high 5:47am and low 5:28pm Sunday, which means the Crab Island sandbar is deepest in the morning both days. Water temperature at NOAA's Pensacola gauge was 86.5 at 2:06am.

Saturday: put the boat day here
Saturday is the day to spend the money on the water. East wind at 5 to 10 is the gentlest breeze Choctawhatchee Bay gets, so a pontoon rental to Crab Island is flat and easy, the sandbar is deep at a morning launch, and a full day is justified for once: $450 to $650 for a 10 to 12 passenger pontoon against the $300 to $400 half-day rate, with a $250 to $500 refundable deposit hold, a $30 to $60 damage waiver and $40 to $60 in fuel on top. Saturday morning pontoon slots are the tightest inventory in town as of Friday; afternoons and full days are open. Same-day cancellations get reposted between 7 and 9am, often $25 to $75 off.
If you would rather not drive a boat, Saturday's per-person tours are all running and mostly open: dolphin cruises at $30 to $50, snorkel trips at $45 to $75, parasailing at $75 to $110 with the light wind making it a smooth ride, and a captained four-hour private charter for up to six at $450 to $700. For the evening, the Saturday sunset tiki cruise, $50 to $75 per person shared or $350 to $500 private, is the best sunset booking of the month: sunset 6:48pm, wind dying to nothing, and it is the one slot I would call about today because it is nearly full.
Beach people get an equally good Saturday. Henderson Beach State Park is $6 per vehicle, the sand is uncrowded by July standards, the water is 86 degrees and clear now that the summer runoff has settled, and with the wind off the land the surf is knee-high. Get there before 10am for a spot near the boardwalks; by noon on a September Saturday the lot fills with locals.
Sunday: build the day around 1pm
Sunday is a morning-outdoors, afternoon-flexible day. The storm chance is timed after 1pm, and September storms here build over the bay and the mainland in the early afternoon and drift toward the coast, so anything on the water should be a 9 to 11am or 10am to noon slot: a dolphin cruise off the harbor with the pod working the pass on the outgoing tide, a one-hour jet ski rental at $85 to $150 on a bay with a west wind of 5, or a morning tiki cruise with a swim stop. All of these have wide-open availability as of Friday.
For the afternoon, have the backup ready rather than deciding at 1pm with three kids in the car. HarborWalk Village, Destin Commons and Baytowne Wharf are the three covered-or-mostly-covered options, and our where-to-stay comparison explains which one is closest to your rental. If the radar is clear by 3pm, the Sunday sunset cruise at 6:46pm often turns out to be the most dramatic sky of the weekend; operators refund or reschedule in full if the captain cancels, so the only cost of booking it is the chance of a rebook.
What is open, what has thinned out
Every rental counter, cruise operator and charter dock in the harbor is running this weekend. What has changed since summer is the schedule around the edges: fewer sunset departures, a 6pm return deadline on most pontoons, and the floating food and drink vendors at Crab Island mostly gone for the season, so a boat day means packing your own cooler. Restaurants along the harbor are on shoulder-season hours, which mostly means shorter waits, and Saturday dinner at HarborWalk still needs a 6pm arrival if you want a waterfront table without one.
Lodging is where the season saves you the most. Beachfront condos that were $350 to $500 a night in July are commonly $175 to $300 this weekend, minimum stays have relaxed, and Friday-night arrivals for a two-night weekend are widely available, which was not true two weeks ago. Book direct with the property or through the major listing sites; the shoulder-season rate is usually already applied.
Three things I would skip
A Sunday afternoon boat rental of any kind, for the storm reasons above. A Saturday sunset pontoon block, because the 6pm return deadline and the 4:48pm low tide combine to give you a hurried, shallow last hour; do the tiki cruise for the sunset and the pontoon in the morning. And planning a Sunday around a specific outdoor dinner reservation on the harbor; make it Saturday when the forecast is dry, and leave Sunday evening loose.
FAQ: Visiting Destin the Weekend of September 19-20, 2026
Is the weekend of September 19-20, 2026 a good weekend to visit Destin?
It is one of the best of the year. Saturday is sunny, 89, east wind 5 to 10 with a 12 percent rain chance and 86-degree water, and the post-Labor Day crowds are gone, so Saturday morning boat slots are the only thing that is tight. Sunday is warm with a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1pm, so put the water activities in the morning and keep an indoor afternoon backup. Same-day cancellations are reposted between 7 and 9am, and a day's notice is enough for almost everything.
What is the weather in Destin this weekend?
Saturday: sunny, high 89, east wind 5 to 10, 12 percent rain chance, low 77. Sunday: mostly sunny, high 88, west wind 5, 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1pm. Water temperature is 86.5 degrees. No tropical systems are active as of Friday morning.
Is the Gulf still warm enough to swim in Destin in late September?
Yes. The NOAA gauge at Pensacola read 86.5 degrees early Friday, the Gulf and the bay stay in the low to mid-80s through the end of September, and Henderson Beach State Park is $6 per vehicle with uncrowded sand.
What do the main Destin activities cost this weekend?
Pontoon half day $300 to $400, full day $450 to $650; jet ski $85 to $150 an hour; dolphin cruise $30 to $50 and sunset cruise $35 to $60 per person; snorkel trip $45 to $75; parasailing $75 to $110; shared tiki cruise $50 to $75 per person or $350 to $500 private; captained four-hour private charter $450 to $700 for up to six. Condos run $175 to $300 a night on the beach.
What should we do in Destin if it storms Sunday afternoon?
HarborWalk Village, Destin Commons and Baytowne Wharf are the three go-to rain plans, all with covered dining and shopping. Storms here usually pass in one to two hours, so a late-afternoon beach walk or a 6:46pm sunset cruise often survives. Our rainy-day backup guide has the full list.
Do I need reservations for Saturday?
For a Saturday morning pontoon or the Saturday sunset tiki cruise, yes, and you should call today. For dolphin cruises, jet skis, parasailing and Sunday anything, a day ahead is fine, and the 7 to 9am cancellation repost usually has openings.
Are the Crab Island vendors still out this weekend?
Mostly not. The floating food and drink boats thin out after Labor Day and only a few run on September Saturdays. Bring a cooler with lunch, water and ice if you are spending the day on the sandbar.
Is Destin crowded on the weekend of September 19-20?
Not by summer standards. Expect locals at the beach and a couple of hundred boats at Crab Island on Saturday afternoon versus several hundred on a July Saturday, short restaurant waits, and open condo inventory. Sunday will be quieter still.
The bottom line
Boat Saturday, beach Saturday afternoon, tiki cruise Saturday sunset; morning-only water on Sunday with a covered backup after 1pm. Book the Saturday morning pontoon and the Saturday sunset cruise today, everything else a day ahead or off the 7am cancellation list.
